The BMLA awards Prof. Moghissi an honorary membership to acknowledge his outstanding contribution to the field of lasers and light in medical and surgical applications.
In February 2021 it was a great honour for the BMLA and its President Vishal Madan to award Prof. Keyvan Moghissi a long standing Executive Board Member, an Honorary Membership as an acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution to the field of lasers and light in medical and surgical applications.
Prof. Keyvan Moghissi was first appointed as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in Hull in 1970 and advanced quickly to become one of the UK’s leading cardio-thoracic surgeons before establishing and leading the Yorkshire Laser Centre, the project of a charitable trust, The Moghissi Laser Trust.
He became known as the Founding Father of the Thoracic Surgical Club and the European Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS), and European Respiratory Society (ERS). In 1985, Prof. Moghissi undertook pioneering laser surgery of the chest, and was the first cardiothoracic surgeon to use a laser to remove secondary breast cancer from the lung without loss of lung tissue.
Additional career highlights have included:
- Serving as the Editor-in Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy.
- Organising very popular scientific sessions on photodynamic therapy at the annual BMLA scientific conference
- Honorary membership of L’Academie de Chirurgie (Paris),
- An honorary Visiting Professorship from Guang Zhou University (China)
- Honorary membership of a number of other international and European Associations.
- Awards for contribution to science and cardiothoracic surgery from Russia
- An Award for Lifelong Contribution to Cardiothoracic Surgery from the World Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
- Leading and providing high quality treatments outside the main laser centres
- Setting up a Mobile Laser Unit to provide laser equipment and expertise at other hospitals to reduce the need for patients to travel long distances and by helping local consultants to deliver highest quality laser treatment at their local hospitals
- Long standing Executive Committee member of the British Medical Laser Association.
The British Medical Laser Association (BMLA) was founded in 1980 and is the leading society for medical lasers in the UK. It’s membership comprises a wide range of individuals, including dermatologists, surgeons, nurses, beauty therapists, manufacturers, researchers and safety advisors.
