Why Join?

The British Medical Laser Association is the UK’s leading advocate for the safe operation of lasers and light-based technology in the treatment and diagnosis of human disease. This is achieved through:

  • The promotion of research and development in laser and light-based technology in medicine
  • Establishing essential standards and guidelines in the medical application of lasers and light-based technology
  • Promoting collaboration and understanding between clinical and scientific disciplines in the field of laser and light-based technology application

However, this could not be achieved without significant input from a multidisciplinary body of knowledge. The British Medical Laser Association membership includes medical, surgical and dental professionals and allied colleagues, including but not limited to: nurses, technicians, scientists, aestheticians, manufacturers, suppliers, safety advisers and individuals with an interest in these areas.

By joining the BMLA, you will have the opportunity to help continue the development of safer and better ways of applying lasers and light-based technologies in medicine.

Membership Types & Fees

Standard Membership (former Basic) costs £75 and includes:

    • Access to the BMLA members portal providing access to the membership community via chat functions, interest groups and direct messaging. The portal also allows members to download a variety of useful resources, documents and access sector specific news and articles.
    • Discounted fees for the BMLA Annual Conference (the 3-day annual, focused event, that brings together education, knowledge sharing and engagement between our members and experts in the field)
    • A PDF certificate and a digital membership badge

Full Membership costs £105 and includes all of the above plus:

    • Additional concessions for events such as BMLA on-line training courses and webinars
    • Automatic membership subscription to the European Laser Association (ELA) with discounted fee structure provided by the organisers of any annual ELA-convened conference advertised on BMLA website.
    • Full members can also participate in wider discussions at a European level on matters relating to laser applications in surgery and medicine. You won’t receive a separate certificate of membership for the ELA. Your BMLA certificate means you are also a member of the ELA. Please see their website for further explanation.

Please note, BMLA were informed in October 2025 that the Lasers in Medical Science journal will be open access from 1st January 2026. Full members can continue to access the journal via a direct link when logged into their membership profile if required.

Apply for Membership

New member applicants must either be nominated by a current member of the BMLA (the nominee must hold an active membership) or submit a summary CV (PDF format) with their application. Please ensure you have these details ready before beginning your application, as you will be required to provide the information during the process.

Once your application has been submitted, this will be reviewed by the BMLA Committee. You will be notified by email once the review process is complete (please allow up to 14 days) or if additional details are required. Please ensure you provide a correct email address during the application process.

Payment will be required once the application has been approved.

In cases where membership has lapsed for 3 years or more, a new membership application is required.

Certificates

A Certificate of Membership will be available to you via the designated members platform area, once your membership payment is complete. This will be dated from the commencement of the membership.

Membership Badge

To attest professional membership of the BMLA, current members are encouraged to use the annual Membership Badge available as a downloadable file from the Resources section of the Membership Platform, once payment has been completed.

The Membership Badge must be hyperlinked to: https://www.bmla.co.uk/. The Membership Badge can be displayed by the individual member with valid BMLA membership for the duration of their membership.
