About Us

The British Medical Laser Association (BMLA) was founded in 1980.

The BMLA is the foremost society in the UK for users of lasers, light and energy-based devices; for medical, surgical and dental professionals and allied colleagues, including but not limited to: nurses, technicians, scientists, aestheticians, manufacturers, suppliers, safety advisers and individuals with an interest in these areas.

The BMLA is a Registered Charity No. 800062.

The British Medical Laser Association is a scientific society established to:

  • Promote the safe operation of lasers and light based technology in the treatment of human diseases.
  • Promote research and development in laser and light based technology in medicine and by the publication of the useful results of such research.
  • Establish standards in the medical application of lasers and light based technology.
  • Promote collaboration and understanding between clinical and scientific disciplines in the field of laser and light based technology application.

Meet the BMLA Executive Board

  • Dr Tom Lister, PhD
    BMLA President

    Tom Lister is Lead Healthcare Scientist for Somerset and a Consultant Clinical Scientist specialising in non-ionising medical physics. He is a certificated Laser Protection Adviser supporting medical, dental and aesthetic practice across the UK, an expert observer to IEC TC76, Associate Editor of Lasers in Medical Science, and an RPA2000 Assessor for Laser Protection Advisers.

  • Dr Sanjay Rajpara MD (I), FRCP
    BMLA Vice-President
    Consultant Dermatologist, Derm(Mohs) surgeon and laser specialist NHS Grampian and NHS Tayside, BMI Albyn hospital, SKn Aberdeen, ACE dermatology ltd.

  • Mr Vasant Oswal MBBS, DORL, MS, DLO, FRCS
    Chair of the Education Committee
    Vasant Oswal is an Emeritus Consultant Otolaryngologist at James Cook University. He is a Pioneer and a recognised World Authority in Lasers in ENT.

  • Prof. Harry Moseley
    Emeritus President of the BMLA 
    Now semi-retired, Prof Moseley still has an active interest in biophysical aspects of lasers and ultra-violet radiation. He continues to provide laser treatment at a private clinic and acts as independent expert in medico-legal cases involving laser treatments.

  • Stan Batchelor FSRP FIPEM CRadP
    Lifetime career in the NHS as past Head of Radiation Safety at Guys & St Thomas’ Hospital. Prior to retirement, Stan had a major input to CQC, HIW and Council licensing. Currently a certificated LPA involved with SRP and BMLA professional committees.

  • Dr Mark Brewin PhD
    Mark is a Consultant Clinical Scientist at the Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in lasers and burn scars, currently leading NIHR-funded research into early laser treatment for hypertrophic burn scars.

  • Julie Robinson
    A certificated Laser Protection Adviser (LPA), Julie has contributed extensively to laser safety education, standards and professional certification. With extensive experience across major NHS Trusts, she currently works at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

  • Dr Samira Batul Syed

    Lead for the Staff and Associate Specialists Group at GOSH.
